The Traffic Problem in Our Country

This is everyone’s concern. The traffic problem in the United States is not, as is commonly supposed, the worst in the world. Our per-mile accident rate is considerably lower than that of most civilized countries. Mostly because it is the result of intensive safety campaigns and better driver education, law enforcement, roads, and vehicles.

The Rate of Traffic‑Related Accidents

This problem is still much too serious to ignore. Especially, when you consider that every ten minutes, someone dies in an automobile accident. Six people die every hour, and 150 people pass away due to these accidents every day. In one year, about 33,000 people–the population of a small-sized city–are killed in traffic accidents.

One out of every two people living today will be involved in a crippling fatal traffic accident. A lot of individuals and organizations care about what happens to these drivers, including the President of the United States, the governor of the state, the mayor of your community, your city police, traffic courts, traffic engineers, and your schools.

Defensive Driving:
The Art of Staying Alive

This is a key concept in the Driver Improvement Program. It represents an approach to the driving task that, when applied, can lessen your chances of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. Defensive driving means driving to prevent accidents despite the actions of others or the presence of adverse driving conditions.

Defensive Driving Objectives

  • 1) Reinforce safe driving habits Identify consequences of overdriving the road conditions (dark, narrow shoulders).
  • 2) Teach some skills that the student may be able to employ to counter or correct errors, which could result in loss of control or skidding.
  • 3) Teach effects of fatigue, reduced visibility, and reaction time.
  • 4) Teach the running commentary in learning to adjust to various traffic situations. Good habits can be developed easily by talking about what you see.
  • 5) Teach what you should do during emergencies, such as having malfunctioning headlights, your car catches fire, you must stop on a highway, your hood flies up, you’re on a collision course, your car plunges into the water, etc.

Why Learn About Defense Driving?

As a defensive driver, you will learn to “give” a little. This means that you will tailor your driving behavior to different factors, such as the unexpected actions of other drivers and pedestrians, the unpredictable and ever-changing factors of light, weather, road and traffic conditions, the mechanical condition of your vehicle, and even how you feel.
